New research puts a figure on something many IT leaders already suspect – and it isn’t the big, headline-grabbing breach that does the most damage.
New research has put a hard number on a problem many Irish business owners already sense but struggle to quantify: cyber risk is costing Irish SMEs up to €3.4 billion every year. That figure comes from The Hidden Cost of Cyber Risk, a report commissioned by eir Business, supported by Microsoft and researched with Dr. Mauricio Perez-Alaniz of the Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick.
Behind the headline number is a detail that should reshape how every SME thinks about security spending. The greatest financial impact does not come from major, one-off breaches. It comes from repeated, day-to-day disruption — the kind that erodes productivity quietly and consistently across the year.
THE NUMBERS AT A GLANCE€3.4bn estimated annual cost of cyber risk to Irish SMEs. 7.2m working days lost each year across affected businesses. ~€50k typical impact per firm each year — close to three weeks of lost work. 30 – 5 days of annual downtime — the gap between low and high preparedness. |
It’s the everyday incidents that add up
We see this pattern constantly with the SMEs we support. A phishing email that ties up a staff member for an afternoon. A ransomware scare that takes a shared drive offline for a day. A mailbox compromise that quietly forwards invoices to the wrong account. Individually, none of these makes the news. Collectively, they drain time, money and focus.
The research bears this out. It attributes the bulk of the €3.4 billion not to catastrophic events but to “the cumulative effect of repeated disruption, downtime, lost productivity and operational interruption.” As eir Business Managing Director Susan Brady put it, “for most SMEs, it is the cumulative impact of everyday incidents that drives significant loss of time and productivity.”
Preparedness changes the maths
The most encouraging finding is that this cost is not fixed. It is highly sensitive to how prepared a business is. Firms with low preparedness face more than 30 days of downtime a year. Well-prepared firms face closer to five. The report also found that structured, well-managed data reduces the likelihood of a successful attack from roughly 40% to 24%.
In other words, the businesses that treat security as an ongoing discipline, rather than something they react to after an incident, pay a fraction of the price. That is the difference between a managed environment and an unmanaged one.
What this means for decision-makers
The takeaway for business owners and IT leaders is clear. Cybersecurity spend should not be framed as a cost centre that only exists to guard against worst-case scenarios. It is an investment in operational continuity and staff productivity, both of which are already under quiet, sustained pressure whether or not a business chooses to address it.
For Irish SMEs in particular, this matters. Smaller teams feel every lost hour more acutely, and rarely have the in-house resource to monitor threats around the clock, keep systems patched, harden Microsoft 365, and maintain a tested backup and recovery plan all at once. That is exactly the gap a security-first managed IT partner is built to fill.
How ITM Tech helps
At ITM Tech, we help SMEs across Kildare, Dublin, Meath, Laois and beyond stay ahead of cyber threats with proactive security measures that reduce risk and keep their business running smoothly.
Our approach is built around the key areas of resilience highlighted in the research: continuous threat monitoring and endpoint protection, email and identity security, secure Microsoft 365 configurations, and reliable cloud backup and disaster recovery. These services are backed by a responsive helpdesk that resolves issues quickly, preventing small problems from turning into costly downtime.
Just as importantly, we take the time to understand your business, not just your systems, and give practical risk guidance without overwhelming your team. The goal is simple: fewer disruptions, less downtime, and a security posture that quietly protects your productivity all year round.
